It is always surprising to me when someone mentions that they are uncomfortable speaking in public. I only say surprising because this particular skill is one that I actually enjoy!
For the most part this fear of public speaking is situational. In general, people seem to be okay speaking with a group of direct report employees or speaking up in an educational environment. However, when it comes to speaking in public to a group of people they are unfamiliar with or on an unfamiliar topic - they report feelings of unease and even slight fear.
So, how would someone get over this? A friend of mine once mentioned that she signed up for a Toastmasters group which helped considerably. She was able to build more confidence and challenge herself to operate out of her comfort zone.
Public speaking is a skill worth stretching and improving, if this is one of your 'weak' areas you might want to think about challenging yourself to improvement!
