Keeping track of employees and information in this business climate is a wee bit of a challenge to say the least. Employees are subject to internet policies, non-disclosure agreements and logging in to various terminals all in an effort to maximize security and handle information flow.
For Example: Telus has come up with a key card that operates everything from computers to parking lot access doors. (source), although their security is state-of-the art, it is nothing like Thomas English Muffins, who have broken up their secret recipe into seven parts just to ensure that no one can reproduce their final product (source). Compare this to a hospital in the Middle East that requires employees to finger-print in and out every morning, or the City of London that has an entire department dedicated to Corporate Security and Emergency Management - you get the picture.
With certain companies throwing open their doors through open source and sharing philosophy vs. companies that are locked down tighter than a drum; how is this emphasis affecting employees and their ability to do their jobs when issues such as banning the use of USB drives is more important than employee performance.
What all of this simply comes down to is creating priorities through a proper risk assessment and taking into consideration the impacts of new systems.
How are you handling the CHANGE?
